Frequently Asked Questions
Standard grinding goes 150–300mm below ground level — enough to re-turf, garden or mulch over the top. If you're building, concreting or laying a driveway over the spot, tell us and we'll grind deeper or grub the stump out completely with an excavator so nothing is left to settle later.
In most cases yes — our compact grinding equipment fits through standard gates and side access. For the rare stump that genuinely can't be reached by machine, we'll give you honest options rather than force a bad outcome.
Your choice: leave them as mulch (they settle into good garden material as they break down), backfill the hole with them, or have us cart them away and backfill with soil so the spot is ready to plant or turf immediately.
Grinding removes the growing crown of the stump, which stops regrowth for the vast majority of species. A few aggressive species can sucker from remaining roots — if yours is one of them we'll tell you at quote time and treat it so it stays gone.
Price follows stump diameter, timber hardness, access and how many you have — doing several in one visit is always cheaper per stump. Send a photo with something for scale (a boot or a bucket works) and we'll usually quote on the spot. Quotes are free.
All the time. Plenty of tree jobs get quoted without the stump to keep the headline price low, and the stump sits there for years afterwards. We'll grind stumps from any job, any age — one or a whole property's worth.
What moves a stump grinding price
We price stumps on the time and the access, not off a formula. On open ground with an easy run at the stump, a small stump around 15 cm is about $60 plus GST; a 30 cm stump is roughly $100–$150 plus GST; and a big half-metre-to-a-metre stump is $400–$500-plus plus GST. Access is what changes those figures — a stump behind a narrow gate takes a smaller, slower machine, a concrete ring has to be dug out first, and a raised garden bed needs ramps to get the grinder to it. Grinding the stump in the same visit as the tree removal usually works out better than bringing a machine back later. We quote it free on the day.
