When the problem is what is above the driveway

Every so often the obstacle is not the tree. It is the carport, the shade sail, the low branch over the entrance, the awning on the shopfront.

The SST-37 stows at 3.15 metres. That is low for a machine that still delivers 12.8 metres of working height and 8.5 metres of horizontal reach, and it is the whole reason we keep one.

It is an articulated telescopic boom, so it goes up and over as well as up and out, with 370° of rotation — not continuous, but more than a full circle, which is plenty for placing a basket accurately.

Exactly where it will and will not get to

Every job comes down to one question: will it reach? This is Versalift’s own envelope for the SST-37, with the axes in feet down the left and metres down the right.

The outer dashed line is the limit of the basket. At its highest the machine works to 42 ft (12.8 m), with the platform floor at 37 ft (11.3 m). At its furthest it reaches 27 ft 9 in (8.5 m) out.

The drawing shows the three positions that matter on a tight site: straight up, reaching out level at around sixteen feet, and dropped down low over the side. That articulated lower boom is the reason it gets up and over an obstacle rather than only straight up.

This is the drawing for the insulated EIH build. Rotation is 370°, and it is not continuous — worth knowing when you plan where to park.

Versalift build the SST-37 with insulation as an option, and the rating varies between sub-variants of the model. That means the honest answer about what this particular machine is rated to comes off its own compliance plate, not off a brochure for the model range.

What you are actually hiring

A three-metre travel height is a genuinely useful thing to have in a fleet. It is worth having only if the machine behind it is certified, maintained and replaceable.

The SST-37 solves a specific problem: getting under something on the way in. If that is not your problem, it is probably not your machine, and we will say so.

We are a tree contractor first and we own the whole range, so there is nothing in it for us in putting you on the wrong one. If you need the height, we will quote you the height.

Insulation on this model is a factory option and it varies between sub-variants. Rather than repeat a brochure figure at you, we read this machine’s own compliance plate and tell you what it actually says.

Kept right in our own workshop

An articulated telescopic boom has more moving joints than a straight one, and every one of them is a wear point. That is what the three-monthly inspection is looking at.

Electrical test every six months, load and weight test every twelve, and a full engineer-signed strip and rebuild at ten years and every five after that. Hydraulics, electrical and fibreglass are all handled by our own people.

If it does have to come off you, a replacement goes out.
