The middle of the fleet, and the busiest machine in it

If you ring us and describe an ordinary job — a big gum over a house, a line of roadside trees, a roof that needs getting to — this is usually the machine we put on it.

Eighteen metres of working height covers most of what a tree crew actually meets, and 11.1 metres of outreach is what lets you sit the truck on the driveway and still get out over the back fence. The basket takes 350 kg, so it is two people and their gear rather than one person travelling light.

At 10.2 tonnes tare and 4.2 metres of travel height it is a straightforward truck to get onto a site and set up, which matters more on a tight suburban block than another few metres of height ever would.

Reach and working envelope

Eighteen metres up, eleven metres out

This is the 18GB’s working envelope, taken from Sherrin Equipment’s own operator manual. The grid is one metre a square, so you can read the machine straight off it.

Sherrin quote two pairs of figures, and the drawing shows why. Rated height is 16.5 metres and rated reach 10.5 metres — that is the certified envelope, and it is the 16.5 marked on the axis. Working height is 18 metres and working reach 11.1 metres, which is what the machine actually achieves.

The inner line is the working height, and it tops out at 18 metres. The outer line is the same envelope plus 600 mm of reach from the edge of the basket, which takes it to 19 metres. Both are measured to a point 1,500 mm above the basket floor — roughly chest height on someone standing in it, which is the height that actually matters when you are working.

At its furthest the envelope runs out to about eleven metres from the centre of the truck, and it holds that reach through the mid-height band between roughly five and eight metres — the working zone for most tree and line jobs.

It also works below ground level, down to about a metre under the truck, which is what you want on a batter, over a retaining wall or into a gully.

Where an insulated tower earns its keep

Height is the number people ask about first. On most of the jobs this machine goes to, it is not the number that decides anything — the wires are.

The 18GB is Sherrin’s Glove & Barrier build, rated to 132 kV ac under AS1418.10 (interim) 2004 and acceptance tested to 275 kV. The insulation is layered rather than a single barrier: the fly boom is full GRP at 132 kV, the lower boom carries a 33 kV insulating insert, and the basket itself is rated to 22 kV with an insulating liner. That layering is what lets a crew work gloved on live conductors rather than waiting on an outage.

The rating that matters on the day is the one on the machine’s own plate and its current test certificate, and clearances still come from the network operator and your operator’s ticket. Every insulated machine we own is electrically tested every six months by our own auto electrician, and the certificate travels with the truck.

This is the machine that goes out the most, which means it is also the machine we have had the most chances to get wrong. What you are hiring is everything we have put in place so that it keeps turning up and keeps working.

The advice comes from operators

We are a tree and vegetation contractor before we are a hire company. Our own crews spend their weeks in this basket, on suburban blocks and roadsides across Gippsland.

That is why the first thing we ask about is the access rather than the height. Eighteen metres is plenty for most jobs; whether the truck can be placed where it needs to be is the question that actually decides the day.

Busy does not mean tired

A machine that works this often could easily be the worst-maintained truck in a fleet. Ours is on the strictest schedule precisely because it does the most hours.

Inspections every three months, electrical test every six, load test every twelve, and a full engineer-signed rebuild at ten years and every five after. It is not on hire while any of that is overdue.

If this machine has to come away from you — a breakdown, a service, its recertification — another tower goes out the same week. Because this is the busiest truck in the fleet, it is also the one we have the most cover for.

How the busiest truck stays the most reliable

Most of the work is done in-house — two diesel mechanics, a full-time auto electrician, a spray painter and fibreglass repairs, with hydraulic specialists five minutes down the road.

That is the whole reason this machine can do the hours it does. When something needs attention it goes into our workshop and comes back out, rather than joining a queue behind another company’s fleet.

And if it does have to come away from you mid-hire, another tower goes out. You are not waiting on our repair to finish.
