What you should be handed with an EWP, every time

There are four documents that decide whether a machine can be put to work on a commercial site, and all four should exist before the truck leaves our yard. The compliance plate is fixed to the machine and carries its rating. The electrical test certificate confirms the insulation is intact. The load test certificate covers the boom, the basket and the legs. And the logbook shows the maintenance has actually happened rather than being asserted.

We keep those current because our own schedule requires it, not because a client asked. Every machine gets a full safety inspection every three months with every cover off, and pins, bushes, hoses, legs, tyres and wheel bearings all checked. The trucks are kept clean and painted for a reason that is not cosmetic – a hairline crack on a clean machine is visible the day it appears, and cutters tend to favour the passenger side when they work, so that is where the stress goes and where cracks tend to start.

The one thing the paperwork does not do is give you permission. An insulated machine is what makes work near an electrical asset possible, but the approval to do that work comes from the asset owner and the requirements come from Energy Safe Victoria. Hire the right machine and get the approval separately – one is not a substitute for the other.
