How to write an EWP spec that gets you the right machine

Working height is the figure everyone writes down, and on its own it is the least useful one. It tells us how high the platform goes and nothing about whether the machine can get to where it needs to stand, or whether the boom will reach across whatever is between the truck and the work.

Four things make a spec usable. Working height, which most people include. Outreach, which is how far the boom will go horizontally at the height you need – a machine that reaches 18 metres straight up may reach far less than that across a fence line. Insulation rating, if the work goes anywhere near an electrical asset. And set-up footprint, which is how much ground the legs need before the boom will move at all.

The fifth thing is not a specification but it decides more deliveries than any of the others: the route in. Gate widths, driveway gradients, ground surface and overhead clearance. Every one of our towers is a truck that drives to site under its own power, which removes the float and the crane from the equation, but it still has to fit through the entrance.

Write those five down and any hire company can give you a straight answer. Write only the height and you will get a machine that meets the spec and cannot do the job.

What is the difference between working height and platform height?

Platform height is where the floor of the basket sits. Working height adds roughly two metres for a person standing in it. Specifications should state which one they mean.

Why does outreach matter as much as height?

Because most work is not directly above the truck. A machine rated to a given height will reach considerably less horizontally at that height, and if the work sits across a fence or a garden bed, outreach is the number that decides it.

Do I need to specify insulation?

If the work goes near an electrical asset, yes, and it should be explicit. Every insulated tower we hire is rated and tested every six months, but a spec that does not ask for it may be filled with a machine that is not.
