Utility and telco work has a particular shape to it. The work is spread along a route rather than concentrated on a site, each stop is short, and the machine has to set up and pack down repeatedly without a crew losing half the day to it. A truck-mounted tower suits that because setting up is putting the legs down where the truck already is.

The practical constraints are usually at ground level rather than in the air. Whether the truck can stand where the boom needs to reach from, how much of the lane it takes while the legs are out, and what the surface under those legs is like. A machine with a smaller set-up footprint often does more work in a street than a bigger one that needs to be positioned perfectly before the boom will move.

The overhead constraint is the one that decides the machine. If any part of the route runs near an energised asset, that rating has to be right, and the approval to do the work still comes from the asset owner with the requirements set by Energy Safe Victoria.
